The Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā-sūtra says: “For one who wishes to cultivate the four smṛtyupasthānas in all ways, the smṛtyupasthānas are the dharmadhātu, which gathers all dharmas; all dharmas tend toward the smṛtyupasthānas, and this tending is unsurpassable.” The Avataṃsaka-sūtra says: “Just as the single great earth is able to produce various sprouts,” the earth is the seed of all sprouts. The Lotus Sūtra says: “All marks, substances, and natures of all kinds are of one single kind of mark, substance, and nature. What is this single kind? It is the marks, substance, and nature of the Buddha-seed.” Ordinary scholars say: “The Lotus Sūtra does not illuminate Buddha-nature, but the sūtra clarifies ‘one kind’; what kind of ‘one kind’ is this?” The various herbs, trees, thickets, and groves are metaphors for the seven expedients; the single kind of the great earth is the one true reality, called the ‘Buddha-seed.’”
