Such are the faults of human teachers. What is the intention of the Treatise (Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa)? The Treatise contains two passages. The first passage stops at taking the two vehicles as four hundred [yojanas], not making it five hundred; the later passage takes the two vehicles as one hundred. Now, to reconcile them: the Treatise explains the intention of the shared [teaching]. The shared tradition takes the truth of emptiness (ultimate truth) as the ultimate; having surpassed the three realms, not having destroyed the transformed city, they merely enter nirvāṇa, so it precisely designates nirvāṇa as four hundred. But as for further taking the two vehicles as one hundred, it further explains that the bodhisattva emerging from provisionality comes out of emptiness into provisionality: it is not that nirvāṇa is one hundred, but that entering the three realms is three hundred. Construing the text in this manner does not conflict with the sūtras and treatises.
