Having been cultivated and perfumed for a long time, the grades of the touch of motion become progressively deeper; this is called 'vertical manifestation.' The vertical manifestations of the other seven touches can be understood by analogy with this. If, after the touch of motion has manifested, whether it has subsided or not yet subsided, the touch of coldness also manifests; and if, while coldness has subsided or not yet subsided, another touch manifests further, intersecting across the aforementioned eight kinds, this is called 'horizontal manifestation.' Although there are horizontal and vertical, before and after, if one examines them through the eight touches, the ten virtues, and the five factors, they are never confused. Nor can they all be completed in a single thought-moment. Why is this? The eight touches and four great elements—water and fire being mutually contradictory—cannot be completed simultaneously. Yet these eight touches altogether possess the adornment of eighty virtues; though their names are identical, their pleasant delights differ, just as boiling broth, hot stew, mackerel fish, and chilled plums possess distinct flavors and different pleasures. The other six touches likewise have their distinctions.
