When the extraordinary manifests: One suddenly sees the breath going out, coming in, long, and short, and knows that it comes from nowhere and goes nowhere, neither accumulating upon entering nor dispersing upon exiting. In terms of the fundamental [dhyānas], this corresponds to the coarse and subtle abide-states. If one sees the breath coming and going throughout the entire body, in terms of the fundamental [dhyānas] this corresponds to the threshold stage. Yet in the dark realizations of the fundamental, they claim that there is no body, bed, or mat, which is not an actual absence. It is like ashes covering a fire, which a fool lightly treads upon; or like eating in the night, or like a blind person touching a woman—none satisfy the true circumstances. Here, having the wisdom of contemplation, one sees the breath pervading the body while the concentrated mind is bright, pure, and secure; hence it differs from dark realization.
