From "Tiantai" onwards, it distinctively explains the Dharma that was transmitted; namely, this which was transmitted is what was previously practiced. Within this, it is first brief and then extensive. In the first, the brief part, regarding "Tiantai": "Tian" (heaven) means peak; before the primal breath divided, it was mixed into one, and once the two modalities separated, the clear became heaven and the turbid became earth. This was originally a mundane name, so we temporarily interpret it according to the mundane. "Tai" (platform) is the name of stars; the terrestrial division corresponds to the three platforms (Santai) in heaven, hence it was named after them. Some say: it was originally named "Tianti" (Heaven's Ladder), meaning the mountain is high and one can climb it to ascend to heaven; later people corrupted it in transmission, hence it is called Tiantai. Again, Zhang'an's Shan ji (Mountain Record) states: "It was originally called Nanyue. Prince Zijin of King Ling of Zhou lived there, and his spirit became its deity; he ordered the Duke of the Left and Right to rename it Mount Tiantai." If judged by Sun [Chuo]'s Shan fu (Rhapsody on the Mountain), it says: "The reason it is not listed among the Five Peaks and is omitted from standard records is that its situation is secluded and profound, and its path remote and distant." It is not known whence Zhang'an derived his account. In the customs of the Western regions, calling by name indicates veneration, just as the child's name encompasses father and mother. The Buddha was to be born there, so this etiquette was arranged in advance to cause people to admire his virtue and call his name. In the customs of this land, avoiding the personal name indicates respect; therefore one highlights the person by their dwelling place, and Nanyue is also like this. "Transmission" means transmission and instruction, or receiving transmission; because one receives what the other transmitted, it is said. Next, the enumeration, and third, the demonstration of the teaching, the object, and the name, are all as in the text.
