The first section, the preface, is divided into two. In the general preface, although it resembles the five matters of the general [preface] of collected sūtras, since it is a private record, it lacks [the mention of] those who heard it together. Within it, there are six [parts]: The first four characters recount the essence of what was heard; the two characters "calming and contemplation" directly indicate the essence heard. The two characters "luminous and tranquil" praise the virtues of the essence: "calming" has the essence of tranquility, and "contemplation" has the essence of luminosity. Throughout, the ten chapters and the correct contemplation of the ten dharmas are all nothing other than calming and contemplation, whose essences are all luminous and tranquil; thus it generally refers to the entire work as what was heard. Just as in the Lotus Sūtra, the origin gate and the trace gate are both nothing other than the wondrous Dharma, whose essence is completely real.
