3.34

As for the marks of the fulfillment of vigor: take, for example, Prince Sudāna seeking the wish-fulfilling jewel, as described at the end of the first fascicle. Having obtained the jewel, it fell into the ocean, and he bailed the great ocean; even if his sinews and bones were dried up and exhausted, he would never give up or slacken, vowing to obtain the wish-fulfilling jewel to bestow upon sentient beings and relieve their bodily suffering. The devas asked him [about it], and he replied: "Life after life without rest." Seeing this vigor, the devas helped him bail the ocean, and the ocean water was reduced by half. The nāgas, seeing the ocean water decrease and fearing the ocean would dry up, presented the jewel to him.
