From 'in the world' downward is lamentation. Regarding 'the mediocre' and so forth, the mediocre are the common run of people, not extraordinary individuals. The Guangya says: 'Foolish.' Regarding 'the melody is lofty' and so forth, it is like Master Carpenter Bo setting down his axe before the man of Ying, or Boya snapping his strings upon the death of Ziqi. Therefore, Sengbiao's poem says: 'Zhongqi cannot be met; who can discern what is in the heart of the tune?' When Zhongqi heard Boya play the mountain tune, he said: 'Lofty and majestic, how tall it rises!' When he heard him strum the water tune, he said: 'Vast and surging, how it fills the ears!' Therefore, one knows that if the melody and tone are lofty, those who harmonize with it will surely be few; now, because this method of healing is subtle and wondrous, those who believe in it are likewise rare.
