Next, the Great and Small [Vehicles] are clarified. First, in the Small [Vehicle], the phrase "If the Tripiṭaka..." refers to the Tripiṭaka [master] Paramārtha. According to the intention of the Tripiṭaka, contact comes from the outside. From "This follows..." onward, our school determines that the Tripiṭaka's explanation resides only within the contaminated. From "Mahāyāna" onward, clarifying the Great: the present text draws upon the intention of the Mahāyāna portal to disclose the provisional, hence it concludes below: "phenomena beyond the realms." In the text, it first cites the threefold training to illustrate and explain the eight colours; thus we know that within the threefold training, not only is the path of wisdom not lost through rebirths, but the same is true of precepts and concentration. Why? Precepts are conditioned form-phenomena, and concentration is a conditioned mind-phenomenon. When life decays, the physical non-informative [precepts] fade away together; although the precept-essence departs, the unmanifest precept-karma's acquisition (prāpti) is never extinguished, because it follows the karmic path into the future. Because mundane absorptions can suppress defilements and delusions like insects destroying the viscera, by virtue of suppression they are severed, like insects harming life. Because uncontaminated wisdom has already attained the first fruit, the momentum of the path of wisdom flows into the future, traversing seven lifetimes to exhaust the remaining delusions. Therefore, one should know that by exemplifying wisdom with precepts, the mundane phenomena of the Hinayāna still reach the uncontaminated without being lost through rebirths; hence we know that truly speaking, all mundane phenomena belong beyond the realms. One should know that these phenomena are originally inconceivable phenomena within the tathāgatagarbha; concealing their true marks, they were taught provisionally to meet capacities. The two vehicles failed to understand them and took them to be shallow calculations; thus we know that one must not rely exclusively on the contaminated. From "If manifested..." onward, it concludes the stages, as in the text.
