‘When the kalpa-fire burns to its end, heaven and earth blaze through,
Sumeru and the great oceans are entirely blown away as ashes;
The merits of devas and dragons are exhausted, and within it they wither and perish;
Even the two spheres are like this—what permanence is there in a kingdom? (1)
The spiritual consciousness has no master, provisionally riding upon the four serpents;
Nourished by ignorance, it takes them as a chariot of pleasure;
The spirit has no permanent master, the form has no permanent home;
If form and spirit still part, how could there be a kingdom? (2)
Being originally comes from non-being, compounded by causes and conditions;
The flourishing must decay, the full must become empty;
Sentient beings, wriggling and stirring, all dwell as in an illusion;
All three realms are like this; kingdoms are also so. (3)
Birth, old age, sickness, and death rotate without limit;
Matters go against one’s wishes; sorrow and grief cause harm;
Desires are deep and disasters heavy; sores and warts are ubiquitous;
All three realms are like this—what reliance is there in a kingdom? (4)’”
