The first is demonic spirits. These are beasts of the twelve hours, transforming and creating various shapes and colors—either making the shape of young maidens or old elders, or even terrifying forms and not just one—to harass and confuse practitioners. When these demonic spirits wish to harass practitioners, they each come according to their corresponding hour; one must skillfully distinguish and recognize them. If they come in the yin hour, they must be tiger beasts and the like; if they come in the mao hour, they must be rabbits, deer, and the like; if they come in the chen hour, they must be dragons, turtles, and the like; if they come in the si hour, they must be snakes, pythons, and the like; if they come in the wu hour, they must be horses, donkeys, camels, and the like; if they come in the wei hour, they must be sheep and the like; if they come in the shen hour, they must be monkeys, apes, and the like; if they come in the you hour, they must be chickens, crows, and the like; if they come in the xu hour, they must be dogs, wolves, and the like; if they come in the hai hour, they must be pigs and the like; if they come in the zi hour, they must be rats and the like; if they come in the chou hour, they must be oxen and the like. If the practitioner sees them constantly coming at this hour, one immediately knows it is that animal spirit, speaks its name, and rebukes it, and it will then subside and be eliminated.
