Third, obtaining an unoccupied and quiet place. "Unoccupied" means not engaging in manifold tasks; "quiet" means being free from clamor. There are three places where one can cultivate dhyāna-concentration: First, deep in the mountains, in places secluded from people. Second, in a dhūta araṇya, at least three to four li away from settlements, where the sounds of pasturing cattle have ceased and there is no clamor. Third, in a pure monastery far removed from lay residences. All these are called unoccupied and quiet places.
