Third, rebuking desire for scents: that is, the bodily scents of men and women, the fragrances of worldly food and drink, and all kinds of incense. Foolish people do not comprehend the characteristics of scents; upon smelling them, they become attached, opening the gates of the fetters. For example, when a monk beside a lotus pond smelled the fragrance of the blossoms and felt love and delight in his mind, the pond deity severely rebuked him: 'Why do you steal my fragrance?' Because of attachment to scents, all the dormant fetters are made to arise. Through various causes and conditions such as these, one knows the faults and offenses of scents.
