Answer: "These five hindrances inherently possess the three poisons in equal parts, taking four phenomena as their root, and they also subsume the eighty-four thousand gates of defilement. First, the hindrance of sensual desire is the poison of greed. Second, the hindrance of ill will is the poison of anger. Third, torpor-and-sleep and doubt—these two phenomena are the poison of delusion. Fourth, restlessness-and-remorse is subsumed under equal parts. Combined, they constitute the four divisions of afflictions: within each there are twenty-one thousand, and within the four they combine to make eighty-four thousand. Therefore, eliminating these five hindrances is simply eliminating all unwholesome phenomena. Through these various causes and conditions, the practitioner abandons the five hindrances. It is like being freed from debt, or recovering from a grave illness; like a starving person reaching an abundant land; like escaping on one's own from among wicked bandits, at ease and free of harm. The practitioner is also like this: eliminating these five hindrances, the mind becomes secure, cool, and joyful. Just as the sun and moon, when covered and obscured by five things—smoke, dust, clouds, fog, and the hand of the asura Rāhu—cannot shine brightly, so too it is with the five hindrances of the human mind."
