When practitioners first learn seated meditation, if they wish to cultivate the Buddhadharma of the ten directions and the three periods of time, they should first give rise to the great vow to liberate all sentient beings and resolve to seek the unsurpassed Buddha Path. Their mind must be firm, like a vajra, vigorous and courageous, not sparing physical life. If they are to accomplish all Buddhadharmas, they will never regress. Thereafter, within sitting, they mindfully reflect upon the true mark of all phenomena: namely, that wholesome, unwholesome, and indeterminate phenomena; internal and external sense faculties and objects, delusive consciousness, and all tainted afflictive phenomena; the causes and effects of conditioned birth-and-death across the three realms—all exist because of the mind. Hence the Daśabhūmika-sūtra says: 'The three realms do not exist separately; they are made solely by the one mind. If one knows that the mind lacks inherent nature, then all phenomena are not real.' When the mind is free of defiling attachment, all karmic activities of birth-and-death cease. Having performed this contemplation, one should then initiate cultivation in sequence.
