Second, harmonizing sleep: sleep is an obscuration of ignorance; one must not indulge it. If one sleeps excessively, not only does it abandon the cultivation of the noble Dharma and forfeit effort, but it also renders the mind dark and dull, causing wholesome roots to sink and vanish. One must awaken to impermanence and tame sleep, keeping the vital energy clear and pure and the mindful consciousness bright and clean. Only in this way can one rest the mind in the noble realm and have samādhi appear before one. Thus a sūtra says: 'During the first and last watches of the night, do not neglect [practice]. Do not let a whole life pass in vain with nothing attained on account of sleep. Be mindful of the fire of impermanence burning all worlds; seek your own deliverance early, and do not sleep.'
