Second, rebuking desire for sounds: that is, the musical sounds of the konghou harp, zither, flute, strings, winds, metal, and stone; as well as the songs, chants, and recitations of men and women. When ordinary people hear them, defilement and attachment immediately arise, prompting various bad deeds. For example, when five hundred ṛṣis dwelling on the Snow Mountains heard the singing of kinnara maidens, they immediately lost their dhyāna-concentration, their minds infatuated and frenzied. Through various causes and conditions such as these, one knows the faults and offenses of sounds.
