First, directly explaining the meaning of the sequence of the various dhyānas: From the beginning, the practitioner maintains pure precepts, feels revulsion toward the desire realm, focuses mindfulness to cultivate ānāpāna, and enters desire-realm concentration. Relying on desire-realm concentration, one attains the anāgamya stage. In this manner, relying on the anāgamya stage, one sequentially obtains the first dhyāna up to the fourth dhyāna; these are named concentrations of internal subtle form. Next, for the sake of great merit, one takes external sentient beings as object, generating joy and delight, and sequentially obtains the four immeasurables; these are named concentrations of external subtle form. Although these eight kinds of dhyāna concentration take internal or external objects and differ in their entry into absorption, they all belong to the form realm. In the fourth dhyāna, the practitioner comes to loathe form as a prison, extinguishes the preceding two kinds of form—internal and external—and with single-minded focus takes space as object, overcoming the distress of form and attaining the four formless absorptions; these are named absorptions of the formless realm. These twelve gates of dhyāna are all defiled dharmas.
