First, the defiled mind is the mind of ordinary persons and non-Buddhists; because it possesses the three outflows, it is called a defiled mind. Why? When ordinary persons and non-Buddhists cultivate dhyāna-concentration, if differentiated across four periods, they cannot be free from fetters and outflows. What are the differentiations across four periods? First, at the initial resolve to cultivate dhyāna, they cannot feel revulsion toward the mundane world, because they seek pleasure and karmic fruition within dhyāna-concentration; second, when cultivating dhyāna, they cannot reflect back and observe, giving rise to minds of clinging to views; third, when realizing the various dhyānas, they consider them real and do not know they are deceptive, giving rise to clinging views on stage after stage; fourth, upon rising from dhyāna-concentration, when encountering various objects, they again generate fettering karma. Due to these causes and conditions, it is called a defiled mind.
