Third, explaining the both defiled and undefiled mind is also differentiated across four periods: first, regarding the initial resolve: when this practitioner first resolves to cultivate dhyāna, they are wavering and unsettled, at times feeling revulsion toward birth-and-death and not delighting in dhyāna bliss, or at times giving rise to clinging views, hoping for the bliss of concentration and cherishing karmic fruition. Because revulsion arises, fettering karma is weak and feeble; because they hope for the bliss of concentration, defilements increase. Second, regarding cultivation: as when a person whose roots of goodness are not severed wishes to cultivate dhyāna, although this person accomplishes the five dharmas such as faith, they cannot be called faculties. Because they cannot decisively subdue the fetters, it is called both defiled; because good dharmas such as faith are produced, it is called both undefiled. Third, regarding attainment of realization: when the seven kinds of trainees enter the various dhyānas, although they generate true knowledge, fetters and outflows are not yet exhausted, so it is called both defiled and undefiled, and this meaning extends even to arhats susceptible to falling away. Why? Because they have not yet attained the knowledge of non-arising, it is called both defiled; because they have attained the knowledge of exhaustion, it is called both undefiled. Fourth, when the various trainees rise from dhyāna-concentration and encounter various objects, wherever their severed delusions are not yet exhausted, attachment may still arise, so it is called both defiled; wherever delusions have been exhausted, though encountering various objects, fettering karma does not arise, so it is called both undefiled.
