Furthermore, because the bodhisattva cultivates dhyāna, their body and mind are immovable, shutting the six sense faculties so that evil has no way to enter; this is called great upholding of precepts. Furthermore, because the bodhisattva cultivates dhyāna, they can endure what is difficult to endure—that is, they can calmly endure all honor and disgrace, and even if various evils are inflicted upon them, fearing that it would obstruct samādhi, they do not give rise to anger; this is called patience. Furthermore, because the bodhisattva cultivates dhyāna, they are single-mindedly dedicated and energetic: even if the body is exhausted and suffering, they never retreat or rest, like the analogy of drilling for fire; always sitting and not lying down, gathering scattered thoughts and never being negligent, and even if years pass without realization, they do not retreat or sink away; this is an undertaking of difficult practices, which is great vigor. Therefore we know that, through the conditions of cultivating dhyāna, although they do not intentionally practice the four perfections separately, the four perfections are naturally accomplished.
