Third, in terms of taking the mind as a gate, it also cannot be restricted solely to bodhisattvas. Why is this? Non-Buddhists also contemplate the mind, giving rise to forty-eight views; ordinary beings take the mind as object to enter the four formless states; and as for its applicability to śrāvakas, the Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: "Because my disciples skillfully remedy the mind, they are able to leave behind the three realms." How could this be exclusively the gate of supreme supramundane dhyāna? One should know that the three gates are mutually shared; it is only because the three kinds of persons employ their minds differently that the arising of dhyāna and attainment of the path are each distinct. This principle will be extensively differentiated in section nine, on explaining the arising of teachings from dhyāna-pāramitā.
