Next, the lion's sprint samādhi is explained. Now, to elucidate the lion's sprint samādhi: as stated in the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra, the practitioner relies on the nine sequential absorptions to enter the lion's sprint samādhi. What is called the lion samādhi? Detached from desires and detached from unwholesome phenomena, with vitarka and vicāra, with joy and pleasure born of detachment, one enters the first dhyāna. In this sequence, one enters the second dhyāna, the third dhyāna, the fourth dhyāna, the station of [infinite] space, the station of [infinite] consciousness, the station of nothingness, and the station of neither-notion-nor-non-notion, and enters nirodha-samāpatti. Arising from nirodha-samāpatti, one re-enters the absorption of neither-notion-nor-non-notion; arising from the station of neither-notion-nor-non-notion, one re-enters the station of nothingness; in this sequence, one re-enters the station of consciousness, enters the station of space, enters the fourth dhyāna, enters the third dhyāna, enters the second dhyāna, and enters the first dhyāna. This is called the lion's sprint samādhi. For instance, when a lion sprints, it can not only sprint forward and go, but can also sprint backward and return, which no other beast can do. When the practitioner enters this Dharma gate, it is also like this: not only can one sequentially proceed mind-moment by mind-moment from the first dhyāna directly to cessation of feeling [and notion], but one can also retrace from nirodha-samāpatti back into neither-notion, down to the first dhyāna. This meaning is identical to the lion's sprint; none of the previous dhyānas can do this, and therefore this absorption is called the lion's sprint samādhi.
