10.86

次釋九次第定。九次第定者，離諸欲，離諸惡不善法，有覺有觀，離生喜樂，入初禪，如是次第入二禪、三禪、四禪、空處定、識處定、不用處定、非有想非無想處定、滅受想定，是名九次第定。釋九次第定，即為三意：一者、釋名；二、明次位；三、明修證。

Next, explaining the nine sequential absorptions: The nine sequential absorptions are detached from desires, detached from unwholesome, evil phenomena, possessing vitarka and vicāra, with joy and pleasure born of detachment, entering the first dhyāna; sequentially entering in this manner the second dhyāna, third dhyāna, fourth dhyāna, absorption of the sphere of boundless space, absorption of the sphere of boundless consciousness, absorption of the sphere of nothingness, absorption of the sphere of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, and nirodha-samāpatti. These are called the nine sequential absorptions. Explaining the nine sequential absorptions involves three points: first, explaining the name; second, clarifying the sequential stages; third, clarifying cultivation and realization.
