10.89

答曰：有同有異。彼以無漏鍊有漏，今亦以無漏鍊有漏，故同。彼則但明鍊四禪，為防退轉，轉鈍為利，現法樂及生五淨居故，唯鍊四禪。無色界則無鍊法。今明從初禪乃至非想，悉皆鍊之，令一切諸禪清淨調柔，增益功德，故為異也。尋下修證，自當可見。

Answer: There are similarities and differences. They use the undefiled to smelt the defiled, and here we also use the undefiled to smelt the defiled; hence they are similar. They only explain smelting the four dhyānas: to prevent retrogression, to turn dull faculties into sharp ones, for the sake of pleasant abiding in the present life, and for rebirth in the five pure abodes; thus they only smelt the four dhyānas. In the formless realm, there is no method of smelting. Here, it is explained that from the first dhyāna up to neither-perception-nor-non-perception, all are smelted, rendering all dhyānas pure, pliant, and gentle, and increasing merit; hence they are different. Examining the cultivation and realization below, this will naturally be seen.
