Answer: Those without precepts should receive the precepts again. Or, there are those who arouse the precepts through repentance, as stated in the Sūtra on the Contemplation of Samantabhadra. Furthermore, regarding the bodhisattva precepts: sentient beings, throughout life after life, may have already encountered good spiritual friends, aroused the bodhicitta, and received the bodhisattva precepts, but in the midst of saṃsāra, being inverted, they created sins and lost or violated them. Now, because they take refuge in the Three Jewels, temper them again, and additionally purify them through repentance, by means of these original precepts, dhyāna-concentration will also arise. Therefore, although they lack the precepts of specific rules, they may already possess the original bodhi precepts. Furthermore, as the Mahāyāna Treatise states: "Śīla in the language of Qin means 'delighting in good.' To delight in practicing the good path and not be indolent oneself is called śīla. Whether one receives the precepts and practices the good, or does not receive the precepts and practices the good, both are called śīla." If practicing the good without receiving the precepts is called śīla, then since one already has śīla, how could one not attain the arousal of the various dhyānas and samādhis?
