Answer: The method of scolding desires is as stated in the Mahāyāna [Treatise]: "How lamentable! Sentient beings are constantly afflicted by the five desires, yet they still seek them unceasingly. When one obtains these five desires, they become all the more severe, like adding fuel to a fire, making its flames blaze even higher. The five desires are of no benefit, like a dog gnawing on a dry bone; the five desires increase strife, like birds competing for meat; the five desires burn people, like carrying a torch against the wind; the five desires harm people, like stepping on a venomous snake; the five desires have no reality, like what is gained in a dream; the five desires do not last, like something borrowed for a brief moment. Wordly people are foolish and deluded, greedy for and clinging to the five desires, not letting them go until death, and because of this, they experience immeasurable suffering in future lives."
