3. Explaining the arising of unconditioned benevolence: within a concentrated mind in the desire realm or the anāgamya stage, one suddenly awakens to the fact that all dharmas are neither existent nor nonexistent, seeing neither of the two extremes. That is, whether sentient beings or non-sentient-beings, whether dharmas or non-dharmas, all are ungraspable; thus there is nothing to be conditioned. Because it is unconditioned, inverted thoughts cease, and one is tranquil, serene, and joyful. The mind corresponds with the absorption of benevolence, equally contemplating all as sharing in this serenity and joy, without anger or resentment, without enmity or vexation, vast and immeasurable, pervading the ten directions. These are the signs of the arising of the wholesome roots of unconditioned benevolence. Or the absorption of unconditioned compassion arises, and similarly up to joy and equanimity.
