3.98

一、明驗知虛實者，若於定中發諸禪善根，是中有真有偽，不可謬生取捨。所以者何？若發諸禪三昧時，心不別識，或見魔定，謂是善根發，心生取著，因此邪僻，得病發狂。若是善根，謂是魔定，心疑捨離，即退失善利，是事難識。

First, regarding testing and knowing the false and the true: if during absorption various dhyāna roots of goodness arise, among them are the genuine and the counterfeit, and one must not mistakenly accept or reject them. Why is this? If when various dhyāna samādhis arise the mind fails to discern them, one may see a demonic absorption, claim it is the arising of roots of goodness, become attached in one's mind, and consequently fall into error, fall ill, or go mad. If it is a root of goodness, but one claims it is a demonic absorption, and abandons it with doubt in one's mind, one then regresses and loses beneficial goodness. Such matters are difficult to discern.
