Second, explaining the factor of vicāra: the subsequent subtle mind's discrimination is named vicāra. Once the arising of sensation has been distinguished, the mind of correct mindfulness reflects and discriminates: when the sensation just arose, it was vastly different from wholesome dharmas in the desire realm and dharmas such as anāgamya. Why? Within this sensation there are various jewels of wholesome dharmas arising together with the sensation, which do not exist in the desire realm. Furthermore, discriminating means that the characteristics of the Dharma-jewels within the sixteen sensations are also not the same; knowing what is coarse, one abandons it; knowing what is wholesome, one cultivates it. This subtle mind's discrimination is therefore named the factor of vicāra. Hence the sūtra says: 'Discrimination is vicāra.'
