Answer: Although the two dharmas are in a single mind, their two characteristics are not concurrent; that is to say, when vitarka is present, vicāra is not clear, and when vicāra is present, vitarka is not clear. For example, when striking a bell, although the bell's sound is one, there is a difference between coarse and subtle. Vitarka and vicāra in a single mind are also like this. Furthermore, correspondence with the body faculty and body consciousness is named vitarka; correspondence with the mental faculty and mental consciousness is named vicāra. Body consciousness is external and dull, hence it is called coarse; mental consciousness is internal and sharp, hence it can discriminate and is called subtle. Although these concurrently take the same sensation as their object, their two characteristics are not concurrent; hence it constitutes the factor of vicāra.
