Furthermore, when the practitioner contemplates in this way, the eyes see the disintegration of form, and so it is called 'transcending form'. The sounds of the ear, fragrances of the nose, tastes of the tongue, and tangibles of the body are perceived as disintegrated, and so it is called 'the cessation of the perception of sensory impingement'. Not making various distinctions regarding the two kinds of remaining form and unmanifest form is called 'not attending to various distinct marks'. Once all physical phenomena are extinguished, one single-mindedly conditions [the mind upon] space and attends to space without letting go. The form absorption then wanes, but the space absorption has not yet arisen, and there is also an intermediate dhyāna. At that time, be careful not to feel regret or distress; exert vigorous effort, single-mindedly attend to space, and you will cross over the difficulty of form. This is a brief explanation of the method of cultivating and practicing this absorption.
