First, explaining the signs of the arising of the absorption of nothingness: the practitioner, in the interim, has no sorrow or regret in mind, being focused, diligent, and unflagging. With a single mind inwardly purified, empty with nothing to rely upon, not seeing any phenomena, serenely peaceful and secure, with the mind unmoving—this is the sign of realizing the absorption of nothingness. When entering this absorption, one is joyfully serene and extinguished; perceptions do not arise, and one does not even see the marks of mind, much less other phenomena. Free of discrimination, this is called the absorption of the base of nothingness, also called the absorption of non-perception. Second, explaining the factors; third, explaining essence and function; fourth, shallow and deep; fifth, progress and regress; sixth, virtues—these follow the explanations given previously.
