Second, the method of cultivation also has two parts: first, disparagement and praise; second, contemplative practice and cultivation. As for disparagement, one deeply knows the faults and errors in non-perception: this absorption of nothingness is like stupor, like intoxication, like sleep, like darkness, obscured by ignorance, lacking discernment, with nothing to delight in. Therefore the *Mahāyāna-[śāstra]* says: 'Contemplating the base of consciousness as like an ulcer, like an arrow; contemplating the base of non-perception as like stupor—these are all mental illnesses, not true places of serenity. There is a further sublime absorption called neither-perception; that state is peaceful and secure, free of all faults, and I should seek it.'
