Answer: Form is seen by the eye and heard by the ear; if coarse matters can be rendered empty, how much more so that which is invisible, non-resistant, and insensible to suffering and bliss—how could it not be empty? Furthermore, when form is analyzed down to minute particles, they all disperse, perish, and return to emptiness; these minds and mental factors cannot be apprehended in months, days, seasons, or even in a single thought-moment: this is called the true meaning of emptiness in the four formless [absorptions]. Having understood this, a bodhisattva is also able to distinguish the various characteristics, and out of great compassion and expedient means, for the sake of all sentient beings, practices without attachment. Dedicating this merit toward bodhi, endowing all Buddha-dharmas, and universally bestowing them on sentient beings—this is precisely practicing the bodhisattva path.
