8.12

第二、明次位者，此禪無別次位，猶是約根本四禪、四空立次位。但於一一禪內更有增勝出世間觀定之法，能發無漏及三明、六通疾利，亦於非想後心滅諸心數，入滅受想定，故不同根本暗證取著，無有神智功能。是故雖復次位同於根本，而觀慧殊別，恐人謬解，故立別名。雖名有異，而次位無差。

Second, clarifying the stages: this dhyāna has no separate stages; its stages are established in accordance with the fundamental four dhyānas and four formless absorptions. However, within each dhyāna, there are superior supramundane contemplative absorptions that can swiftly and sharply manifest the undefiled state, the three knowledges, and the six supernormal knowledges; also, in the mind following neither-perception, one ceases all mental factors and enters the absorption of the cessation of perception and feeling. Therefore, it is unlike the blind realization and grasping of the fundamental states, which lack spiritual wisdom and functionality. For this reason, although the stages are identical to the fundamental ones, the contemplative wisdom is distinct; fearing that people might misunderstand, a separate name was established. Although the name differs, the stages do not differ.
