The heart is the Vermilion Bird; the kidneys are the Dark Warrior; the liver is the Azure Dragon; the lungs are the White Tiger; and the spleen is the Yellow Dragon (Gouchen). These five kinds of sentient beings encompass all mundane birds and beasts entirely within them. They also constitute the five surnames—namely, gong, shang, jue, zhi, and yu—with all ten thousand surnames contained entirely within them. In corresponding to written scriptures, they are the Five Classics, and all histories and texts derive from them. If corresponding to crafts, they are the five fields of knowledge and the six arts, and all technical skills derive from among them. One should know that although this body is small, its significance is interconnected with heaven and earth. Speaking of the body in this way, it is not merely the realm of the five aggregates, but also the realm of the country.
