First, inferior vitarka and great vitarka: within the quiet mind, practitioners perceive all the characteristics of the two kinds of realms—internal and external—explained above, discriminating the differences in names and concepts, which are the characteristics of distinct separation; thus it is called vitarka on the conceptual world. Being vitarka on the conceptual realm, it is called vitarka. As for great vitarka: one realizes that although all external names and concepts are distinct, they have no real substance and merely rely upon the five viscera; for example, based on the liver, one expounds the precept against killing, the Year Star (Jupiter), Mount Tai, the Azure Thearch, the wood-soul, the eye-consciousness, benevolence, body hair, the Odes, the jue note, nature, the zhen trigram, and other such dharmas. These dharmas are not different from the liver, and the meaning of the liver is not different from the precept against killing and the rest; this is suchness, and is therefore called great vitarka. Realizing all other dharmas to be like the other four viscera is also like this.
