Third, explaining subsumption under the dharmas: These nine notions condition the bodily forms of the desire realm, are subsumed under the aggregate of perception (saṃjñā-skandha), and are also a small part of the application of mindfulness to the body (kāya-smṛtyupasthāna); they are subsumed either under the desire realm or under the first and second dhyānas. People with scattered minds who have not separated from desire attain what is bound to the desire realm; people who have separated from desire attain what is bound to the form realm. The eight notions beginning with swelling are subsumed under the desire realm, the first dhyāna, and the second dhyāna; the notion of clean bones is subsumed under the desire realm, the first dhyāna, the second dhyāna, and the fourth dhyāna. In the third dhyāna there is abundant pleasure, so these notions do not exist.
