Although food is in the mouth, nasal fluid flows down, mixing with saliva to form a flavor; swallowing is no different from vomiting, and once it enters the stomach, it becomes feces and filth—this is the notion of the impurity of food. Using this contemplation of the nine notions to contemplate the body as impermanent, changing, and ceasing moment by moment is the notion of death. Using these nine notions to turn away from worldly pleasure, knowing that the afflictions are severed, which is peaceful and quiescent, is the notion of abandoning. Using these nine notions to ward off the afflictions is the notion of dispassion. Because the nine notions turn one away from the world, knowing that the five aggregates cease and need not arise again, and that this place is peaceful, is the notion of cessation. If one can skillfully cultivate the nine notions in this way, the ten notions are complete, severing the afflictions of views and thoughts; know that such a person will definitely progress toward the path of the three vehicles.
