Regarding entering the path through sequential cultivation: if the practitioner wishes to seek liberation from the illness of afflictions, he should first recollect the Buddha as a king of physicians, recollect the Dharma as good medicine, recollect the Saṅgha as attendants nursing the sick, recollect the precepts as prohibitions on food and drink, recollect renunciation as recuperative nourishment, recollect the devas as the bodily illness being slightly relieved, recollect ānāpāna to give rise to dhyāna-concentration, and recollect death to awaken to impermanence and the four noble truths. When the illness of the three realms is exhausted, one then attains the noble path.
