[The bodhisattva] further considers: "Abiding in what Dharma gate now, cultivating the bodhisattva path, can I quickly fulfill these four vows?" They immediately realize that abiding in deep dhyāna-concentration can fulfill the four vows. Why is this? If one lacks the six supernormal knowledges and the four analytical knowledges, by what manner of dharma could one save sentient beings? If one cultivates the six supernormal knowledges, they do not emerge without dhyāna; therefore a sūtra states: "Deeply cultivate dhyāna-concentration, and obtain the five supernormal knowledges." If one wishes to sever afflictions, one cannot be wise without dhyāna. Giving rise to wisdom from dhyāna, one can sever the fetters. Wisdom without concentration is like a lamp in the wind. If one wishes to understand the Dharma gates, one must know that all merits and wisdom are contained within dhyāna; as the Mahāyāna Treatise states: "When the Buddhas achieve awakening, arise to turn the wheel of the Dharma, and enter parinirvāṇa, all their various merits are entirely within dhyāna."
