Second, next is explaining cultivation and realization. The practitioner abides in the fourth dhyāna, having already accomplished the masterfully controlled superior colors. At that time, applying a mind of pure mindfulness, they abandon the seven kinds of colors and directly focus their mindfulness on the blue color. Grasping a slight sign of blue radiance the size of a blade of grass, they single-mindedly condition upon its center, and immediately correspond with that slight blue. With the contemplative mind, they direct this slight blue to shine pervasively throughout the ten directions, whereupon they see the radiance illuminating everywhere following their mind: in all the world, the blue sign is seen to pervade fully, remaining still and motionless like a blue realm. This is called the blue totality sphere. The characteristics of cultivating contemplation for the remaining seven totality spheres should also each be distinguished in this way. There are teachers who say: "In cultivating the totality spheres, one grasps the signs of grass blades and the like as conditions; arising from external color, the sign pervades and illuminates everywhere." Those who speak like this not only deviate from the methods of the contemplation gates, but also have no connection whatsoever with what is taught in the *Mahāyāna* [scriptures].
