Now, when cultivating this absorption, since absorption and contemplation are equalized, absorption is deep and wisdom is sharp. Because absorption is deep, it does not scatter when on an object; because wisdom is sharp, progress is swift and unhindered. Therefore, when arising from one dhyāna and entering another dhyāna, it is sharp and swift, mind following upon mind without any intervening thoughts; one enters immediately upon a thought. This is also called uninterrupted samādhi. If practitioners use this mind to enter universally into the various dhyānas, not only are they sequentially pliant and their minds free of intervening thoughts, but they also increase the merits of the various dhyānas, making them ever deeper and more subtle. Just as in smelting gold, its luster and color increase further and its value doubles; therefore, this absorption is called refined dhyāna.
