First, explaining the name: The names and sequential stages of the three factors of vitarka, vicāra, and so forth have already been explained above in the fundamental dhyānas; samādhi will now be distinguished. All concentration of mind in dhyāna is called samādhi, translated into the language of Qin as 'the sphere of correct mental activity'. Since beginningless time, this mind has always been crooked and not upright; upon attaining this sphere of correct mental activity, the mind becomes upright and straight, and is therefore called samādhi. For example, a snake always moves crookedly, but becomes straight upon entering a tube. This is also like that.
