“Having done what should not be done,
And having left undone what should be done,
Burned by the fire of defilements,
One will fall into the evil realms in a future life.
If a person can repent of their transgressions,
Having repented, they should grieve no more;
In this way the mind is at peace and joy,
And one should not constantly brood over it.
If there are these two kinds of regret—
Either that what should be done was left undone,
Or that what should not be done was done—
This is the mark of a fool.
It is not by means of mental regret
That what was left undone can be done;
When various bad deeds have already been done,
One cannot make them undone.”
