Now, in explaining the six dharmas, there are naturally two perspectives: first, explaining in terms of the result; second, explaining in terms of the cause. First, explaining in terms of the result in the desire realm: as for the phrase 'reviling the lower as suffering, coarse, and obstructive', it is because one is disgusted with the coarse and heavy form and mind of the lowest desire realm. The practitioner contemplates: 'Now receiving a retributive body in the desire realm, I am pressed by hunger, thirst, cold, heat, illness, pain, knives, clubs, and so forth; hence it is called suffering.' 'Coarse': this body is composed of thirty-six foul things such as feces and urine; hence it is called coarse. 'Coarse' means ugly and loathsome. 'Obstructive': this body is material and impeded, lacking freedom, obstructed by mountains, rivers, rocks, and walls; hence it is called obstructive.
