Second, explaining repentance through observing signs: the practitioner relies on the repentance methods in various sūtras, focusing the mind with diligence, and in a tranquil mind sees various signs, as explained in the Bodhisattva Precepts. If one repents the ten grave offenses, one must see an auspicious sign for the offense to be eliminated; when a Buddha comes to rub one's crown, or one sees light, flowers, and various auspicious omens, the guilt is then eliminated. If one does not see signs, then although one repents, there is no benefit. Among the various Mahāyāna Vaipulya dhāraṇī rituals, there are many such repentance methods of observing signs. The Tripiṭaka and the *Saṃyuktāgama* also explain methods of repentance through observing signs, saying that when the contemplations of hells, poisonous snakes, white ūrṇā-rays, and so forth are completed, guilt is said to be eliminated. Because all these are performed within a concentrated mind, repentance through observing signs is mostly explained in reliance on the methods for cultivating concentration.
