First, explaining repentance through ritual enactment: it destroys path-obstructing guilt that violates non-informative [form]. Second, explaining repentance through observing signs: it destroys intrinsic guilt of evil karma; therefore the *Mahāyāna-śāstra* says: 'If a monk violates the precept against killing, though he repents, regains pure precepts, and his path-obstructing guilt is eliminated, the retribution for killing is not eliminated.' This can corroborate the former and explain the latter. One should know that because repentance through observing signs exerts great effort, it can eliminate intrinsic guilt. Third, the elimination of guilt through repentance by observing non-arising: it destroys the guilt of the habitual causes of ignorance and all afflictions; this thoroughly eliminates the fundamental root of guilt.
