Second, scolding the five desires and abandoning the five hindrances: In the sūtras it is said that being free from desires and evil dharmas involves vitarka and vicāra. Freedom from desires means scolding and rebuking the five desires; evil dharmas means abandoning the five hindrances. What are called the five desires are mundane exquisite forms, sounds, fragrances, tastes, tangibles, and so forth, which constantly deceive and confuse all ordinary persons and destroy good deeds. If one does not clearly recognize their faults and transgressions and scold and turn away from them with disgust, there will be no way to attain the various dhyānas and samādhis.
